Collaborating

No Need to do it All Alone

Artists are contrary. On one hand they need to recluse, to withdraw in order to hear their inner voice to create. On the other hand, they need to have a crowd, a support group, an audience. Very often the artist is torn between these two polarities. Especially if the artist is an introvert. Artists do not like criticism. They learn to live with it, use it and make good of it. They also need to talk to other artists to “figure-things-out”, to hear another opinion. Throughout art history there have been groups/ schools of thought that banded artists together. As a group, they had more power and influence. So, collaboration is NOT a new thing in the art world. It just has been somewhat neglected by the post-modern experience of extreme individualism.

If there is anything that we have learned from the COVID experience, is that we NEED each other. Loneliness kills as much as a virus. Suddenly it is popular to collaborate with another artists, whether in the same field or just with a common interest. Artist from all over the world are collaborating. Musicians with writers and dancers. Dancers with theater, musicians with plastic artists. Projects are done on various internet platforms, preforming live at the same time in different countries. I too, am collaborating with a fabric artist. We are due to show together at our local gallery, showing and sharing our dialogue.
