Collage

Our community gallery put a “shout-out” to us locals. My exhibit ends at the end of December at the community gallery and this shout out is for January. The subject of the shout-out is collage. I automatically thought of Braque and Picasso. My next thought strayed to grade school art classes. We all think that we know what a collage is, right? Fragments of ready-made, previously used newspapers and magazines arranged in a certain fashion/ composition, using them like paint, thus giving meaning to the piece of artwork.

When in doubt, best to go to the dictionary:

Collage noun ("Collage Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster" https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/collage)

col·lage | \ kə-ˈläzh , kȯ-, kō- \

An artistic composition made of various materials (such as paper, cloth, or wood) glued on a surface. From French, literally, gluing, from coller to glue, from colle glue.

So, my first guess was on mark. Today, it is it extremely easy to make collage without even using paper and paste. All the possible creative drawing, painting and photo platforms give us this ability. I decided to go “proper” and traditional as far as collage goes. The only “digital” experience was to turn various photos and turn them into highly contrast black and white paper prints. I had absolutely no idea why I picked these certain photos except for the fact that they caught my fancy. I had no idea what I was going to do with them. It all became a grand dialogue. The collage itself becoming a mirror to my fragmented fleeting thoughts. I would cut, play/ arrange on the surface, see what I like, what to add, where to paint and so forth. The back-and-forth went on for close to two weeks. I even went on to order a shadow box frame where I will add further elements.

All in all, it was an excellent exercise. Great for kick starting when things slow down in the studio.
