Equality vs. Equal

My grandma used to say that it is easier to attract bees with honey, meaning that being courteous and nice goes a long way. Being generous goes even further. The utopian concept of the Politically Correct is wonderful: accepting all as equal, being nice and generous without offending anyone in any way. The practicality of the P.C. is a different story. The concept that 1+1=2 is correct in math but not in relationships. An individual is not a ½. An individual is a whole. The individual comes complete with their uniqueness. A complete 1. A relationship is a new whole complete 1. Each individual bringing into the relationship their “whole”. The correct equation therefore is: 1+1=1

Equal does not mean equality. Equality means the ability to accept each individual’s uniqueness and accept the diversity, acknowledging that one does not have to adopt the others uniqueness but allowing for co-existence, creativity and productivity thus, creating that new “whole” 1 of the relationship.

Art is a relationship. Our relationship is the dialogue that we have with art, whether as an artist or as an art appreciator. There are many genres of art. Different schools of thought, objective and technique. There is no “good” or “bad” art. Equal does not mean equality. There is sincere art or art that is of different intent. One cannot compare artists or artwork as there is meaningful art for all according to their personality and uniqueness. Be generous and accepting when approaching art.
