Malls

The Temple of Our Times

Haifa is often compared to San Francisco; being a city that is situated on Mount Carmel and flows down to the bay area and sea. The coastal road is beautiful when not clogged with traffic, which is usually the case. If in a hurry, the coastal road can prove frustrating and challenging. What assumingly should be a 15-20 drive from one side to the other side can be an easy hour most days of the week. To ease up traffic, a wonderful tunnel was built that cuts through the mountain and bay, cutting downtime to 10 minutes from the entrance to exit, from one side to the other.

The tunnel is actually two tunnels. The part that divides the two parts, is a fantastic bypass that leads to the neighborhoods on the mountainside. It’s as if one is shot out of the first tunnel into open-air prior to entering the second tunnel. This exit leading to the bypass leads first to an enormous mall. Only the next exit on the bypass leads into the various neighborhoods.

Temples of ancient times were a very clean, immaculate, and quiet center to meet. “Making order within the Chaos” of the everyday life and world. The roads leading to the temples became clearer and wider as one approached the extended temple area/city. Markets and bathhouses surrounded the extended temple area. To go into the temple area to pray or make a sacrifice, one had to bathe, change clothes, change attitude, pay the tax and bring the offering. To whom and what did one pray or make a sacrifice for? Usually to better oneself, be it health or wealth.

It appears that nothing has changed. The Mall has become The Temple of Our Times. Our society's being of consumerism by nature and our accumulation of one-time, disposable materials leads us to almost worship the goddess of money and tangible items similar to the ancient goddess Mammon. In this specific mall, there is a large medical center that functions as an outpatient hospital. Wealth and Health we said?

The appreciation of artifacts and one-of-a-kind often diminishes in the shadow of the need for acquisition for acquisition's sake alone and not for the aesthetic and emotional value of the given item. Art is a window to the soul. It is not a disposable object, but an item with meaning and intent. A visual message.

Everybody needs art. There is Art for everyone’s state of mind, desires, and tastes. Take a break, reflect and delve into some of my art, to my stories.
