My Studio #2. The Importance of Showing Up

The Importance of Showing Up

It appears to me, that lately, everyone is talking about showing up. WHAT IS “SHOWING-UP”?

Basically, it means “to join a group of people” (Cambridge English Dictionary), to be there at a given time. To “show-up” for someone, means to be there for them, to make time and space and to give support and aid. To “show-up and show-out” means “to attend a place and make an impression on the people there (The Macmillan Dictionary).

I SHOW UP. I have a record of showing up. Good things happen when we overcome our fears (that are totally in our heads) and show up. I have so many occasions and stories to tell about showing up, like that running race that I partook in (I am so slow), and won first place for my age group!

I want to share with you my latest in showing up. Someone close sent me a link to an interesting project: The Rollo- Project. An international chain collaboration between artists of various forms: poets, musicians, dancers, illustrators, and painters. There was a form to fill out. I filled it out, added all the required information, sent it out, and forgot about it. What do you know? I got accepted! I proceeded to have a wonderful streamed-live evening on a rooftop with a trumpet player and a dancer, all of us performing live together, in front of each other, holding a dialogue with each other through our various media, limited to two-time capsules of 20 minutes. So here I was, as an artist not use to performing live, with my paints and my canvases, doing my thing! The experience was mind-blowing and the artwork, surprisingly, came out fantastic. The whole concept got my creative juices flowing.

“Sea-View” – Acrylic on Canvas, 70/100cm @Barbara Adler Art – Oct.2021

When I exhibit my art, I show up and out. When I sell my art, I want all to know that I will show up for them. I will be there the entire road, from choice to purchase to shipping. I even want a photo of where you have finally decided (and how to) hang our beloved artwork in its new “forever” home.
