Self-Esteem

My Secret War on Procrastination

I have yet to meet someone that doesn’t have issues with self-esteem. Often, someone appearing over confidant is suffering from the same self-doubts as the under confidant. The “Show” is just different. As I watch the Ukraine’s President Zelensky, I wonder if he has ever had self-doubts (I am sure he has). He appears so sincere, confident and reassuring. Everything that we expect from a leader in trying times.

As far as I can remember, I have always had issues in dealing with my self-confidence. The only (!) area that I felt safe, secure and confident was in art. I was the queen. The minute the colors were in front of me, nothing else mattered. Art is an island. Even in art school, with often other artists' pompous egos, I was able to avoid procrastination (in art only, mind you!). That doesn’t mean that I wasn’t vulnerable to criticism, because I was. I took it very personally, but I had full faith in my artwork. Another area that taught me how to deal with self-esteem, was running.

Anybody who walks can run. I love the movement, the speed (a fast trip-visit in nature), the agelessness and the freedom that running allows. Very quickly on, I realized that I was no Usain Bolt. Nothing near it. I run against myself. Each run, an improvement of my previous self. So how is it in art I just totally dive head in first? I think it is like the Nike logo: JUST DO IT. No overthinking. Just excitement over the materials, of the subject and the thought-eye-hand relationship. When I feel that self-doubt creeping up, I either lace-up or quickly search for any colors at hand and slowly fall into my secret world of form and color. I believe that we all have the ability to develop our own secret arsenal against procrastination. Running to soothe the soul, art to express it.
