Art Work on Walls of Designed Space

I love design. All design. Design uses the same tools as art, including aesthetic value and directs it for more pragmatic purposes. I often think that my alter ego is an architect wanting to build sculptures to the sky, to redefine space. Architects use their tools to create buildings that ARE actual sculptures. Beautiful to look at. Magnificent feats of engineering but impossible to live in. When the purpose is a functional public building, often it can be pulled off. Look at the design of some of our famous museums. That is proof. The crispness and quiet that these buildings infer leave us in awe. Temples of our times.

So, where does it go wrong in designing homes? Exactly that; we don’t live in temples. We are not high priests. We are individuals that wish to have an influence and a say in the design of our personal space. Here is the dilemma; if we leave the design to others, we will get by no doubt their say. Question; is it ours? If we interfere too much, we may get a mish-mash of a design. If we are lucky, we will have an excellent dialogue with our designer and the house will be beautiful and functional. That is the optimal situation. AH! Now comes the issue that we don’t want to change a thing in the interior design and still we aren’t satisfied. WHAT IS IT? Often, the designers pick out rather mundane pictures to put on the wall. Something sterile. A well framed photo or print that doesn’t compete with the design. Allowing for the design to have the main say. This means that the HOUSE is beautiful and somewhat foreboding. To make the place a HOME, more intimate and personal, the owners must decorate their wall with their stories.
