Being Sick, Running and Creative Thinking

The Importance of Goofing Off

Like almost everyone else I know, I finally caught the virus. I have three inoculations and still got it. One week I’m running 16 kilometers the next week I am flat out. It took nearly a month to get back to a 6-kilometer run. Still low energy and still coughing. Not fun.

Basically, the first week was “The” illness. Sore throat, fever, runny nose, loss of taste and a general feeling that I was hit by a truck.

Second week into the illness, no fever and no energy. This continues into week three. Now my mind won’t give me a break! I began to feel guilty that I wasn’t working! (Writing blogs, for example). I just couldn’t do it. As a matter of fact, till yesterday I couldn’t face my computer. Procrastination begins to kick in. Why am I goofing off? What is it with me?

This morning went out for my first run since I got sick. I expected the worse; that I would walk most of the 5 kilometers planned. I walked the first kilometer and then continued to run the next 5k. It felt great! My heartrate was perfect as was my breathing.

What did I learn from this? Resting is extremely important for recovery. Same with being creative. Today was a good day. Today I began writing and drawing. Creating, as in running and recuperating from an illness, a break is an absolute necessity. We need to not do anything! We need to be lazy and feel a bit guilty. That means that we are THINKING. It takes time to bring the thoughts to deeds. We can’t “shoot-from-the-hip”. We need to PROCESS.

Best to plan one’s break, but often life throws at us other options. Behold with grace. All things pass. Best to use time wisely and that means goofing-off time too.
